Save our village square, Santa Margerita, Mosta

The Issue

The Santa Margerita community in Mosta, Malta is about to lose the only open square available for their community needs.  Development permit application PA 02328/15 has been submitted to MEPA for the construction of a four storey building to house un-needed commercial outlets under the guise of a “community centre”.  This would eliminate the only open space in this community that has been used for social and community activities for the past 30 years and destroy the serenity and tranquility of this community while impinging on the setting of the nearby 17th century historic chapel that gives the locality its name.

In addition, all the facilities provided for in the development permit application already exist within the locality and are within walking distance from the proposed site and from each other.   The proposed “community centre” will serve nothing to us the locals – it is just a commercial entity for the developer to make money.

This time it is Santa Margerita in Mosta. Next time it could be anywhere in Malta or Gozo.  If this project is allowed to go ahead, it will be the beginning of a new trend of development - building up any open space available!

Please help us keep our square!

This petition is also being signed by persons who are not residents of the area as we share the same values and commitment whereby open spaces should be conserved. Therefore the proposed four-storey plus development in the middle of the asphalted street intersection should not be permitted..

We are acting to change things that do not work, aiming for a better society. We are doing our part signing this petition and voicing our opinion. If you decide to take action and bring this petition to the attention of others, you will be part of a team of people striving to make our environment a better place to live in.
