The Issue

As residents of Conyers, many of us have witnessed the steady disappearance of forests—majestic, living beings reduced to stumps in the name of rapid development. Trees that once stood as silent guardians of our neighborhoods are being cut down at an alarming rate to make room for buildings and homes that too often lack intention, sustainability, or long-term vision. We understand that communities evolve. Growth can be a beautiful thing when done thoughtfully. But the Earth is not an empty canvas—we live in relationship with her. She breathes through her trees, she speaks through her ecosystems, and she sustains every one of us through the harmony of her cycles. When we clear her forests without care, we do not just alter the landscape—we wound a living being. According to the Center for Global Development, the U.S. loses around 36 million acres of forest each year due to urban expansion. That’s not just land—it’s habitat, it’s medicine, it’s oxygen, it’s memory. It’s life. Mature trees absorb carbon dioxide, protect soil, cool our neighborhoods, and house the wildlife we share this space with. Their removal accelerates climate change and destabilizes the balance we rely on. We are calling for something different—a new way forward rooted in respect, reflection, and regeneration. We, the citizens of Rockdale County, envision a Conyers where: • The Earth is treated as a living partner, not a resource to exploit. • Tree protection laws are strengthened, ensuring careful review and reverence before any removal. • Developers prioritize repurposing existing buildings, reducing the need to destroy untouched forests. • Sustainable practices become the norm, honoring both our need for growth and the land’s need for preservation. Let us remember: how we treat the Earth is a reflection of how we treat ourselves. Let’s choose connection over convenience, intention over impulse, and harmony over harm. Please sign this petition to support a living, thriving Conyers—and to protect the trees and natural spaces that make it so. With care and conviction, A Rockdale Citizen
