SAVE OUR SUBWAYS TOLWORTH ROUNDABOUT

The Issue

In June this Year Transport for London is proposing to fill in the Pedestrian Subways that run under the Tolworth Roundabout directly against Residents wishes.

It is being done to provide a short extra Lane on the South West Side of the A240 thinking it will help traffic flow and reduce congestion.

However this project apart from wasting what money we have for our roads, that would be better spent on maintaining and filling in the potholes of the ones we already have; will increase the number of pedestrians and cyclist using the Roundabout on the surface.

Hence this will mean more use of the pedestrian lights and with it being a very busy roundabout it will mean more time when traffic flow is suspended and putting the frailer, elderly, disabled members of our Community and cyclist in real jeopardy. We have all experienced the amount of dead time you get with pedestrian crossing lights sometimes they are red and nobody crosses and they have got impatient and taking the risk to cross on green.

If there is money to be spend in this area then we would suggest it is invested more wisely and to the betterment of the Community in changing one side of the subways to a ramp and  making Tolworth Station Step Free for the Disabled by installing Inclinators Incline Lift seeing the severity of the existing stairs.

Plus the London Mayors LLSC ( London Lorry Scheme Committee) force  all large Juggernauts especially for the large supermarket chains to go to the M25  Junction 9, down the  A243 through  Malden Rushett Village to get to the A3 at the Ace of Spades and on to the A3 towards London. This is due to  the Tolworth Railways Bridge not being able to  take these larger maximum permissible height vehicles and needs raising by some 500mm.

The raising of the Bridge Height would be far more beneficial than a hundred yards of extra lane which will still be controlled by the lights and would mean we lose the safe means for pedestrians to negotiate the roundabout and it doesn’t arrest traffic flow i.e. THE TOLWORTH ROUNDABOUT SUBWAYS.

One good thing we did see carried out by TFL and works really well is  the lengthening of the filter lane on the A240 for vehicles turning right into Jubilee Way but the maximum sized juggernauts  coming from the A3 cannot take advantage of it due to the hieght restriction.

Thanking you in anticipation of your support and joining our petition .
