Save our Space: Support SMRD Secure Their Practice Center

The Issue

In January of 2025 just days before the first practice of the season, Smoky Mountain Roller Derby received news from the Recreation Department after a meeting with Swain County Board of Commissioners that will potentially affect the future of the team. The board introduced a $93,000 budget for revisions, including the installation of a sport court at the Swain County Recreation Center, the practice facility for SMRD. With this new floor installation, the county decided to deny SMRD access to practice at the facility due to the possibility of damage from skating equipment. This decision has left SMRD struggling to find a place to practice for the 2025 roller derby season, and forced the team to cancel already scheduled home games.

Smoky Mountain Roller Derby has been practicing for over a decade at the Smoky Mountain Recreation Center. Beginning in 2011, the team has had a positive influence on the local community. SMRD has served as an inclusive outlet for all, especially women, offering one of the only local opportunities for competion in a contact sport. The team also supports young athletes as well in its highly-ranked junior team, Smoky Mountain Junior Roller Derby. Smoky Mountain Roller Derby has had a large economic impact as well, attracting tourists to Bryson City with its bimonthly events and donation contributions to local nonprofits such as PAWS, Big Brother Big Sister, and many others.

Contrary to concerns about potential damage, roller derby skates are specifically designed to be used on various types of flooring, including sport court surfaces. The wheels of roller derby skates are made from high-quality polyurethane, which is a material known for its durability and non-abrasive properties. This means that the skates glide smoothly over the surface without causing scratches or dents. Additionally, the skaters of Smoky Mountain Roller Derby are committed to maintaining the pristine condition of the sport court. The team strives to implement strict guidelines to ensure that all skaters use only the appropriate wheels and equipment that are certified safe for sport court use.

Furthermore, the team is dedicated to upholding the longevity of the floors through regular maintenance and care. They will continue the practice of cleaning the floors before and after each session to remove any debris that could potentially cause damage. The team has always taken pride in helping maintain the facility by keeping it clean and organized, and this commitment will only be strengthened with the new sport court installation.

In conclusion, allowing Smoky Mountain Roller Derby to continue practicing at the Swain County Recreation Center will not only benefit the team but also the broader community. We assure the board that our use of the sport court will be responsible and respectful, ensuring that the investment in the new flooring is protected for years to come.
