Save our school crossing patrols in Warrington

Save our school crossing patrols in Warrington
The Issue
School crossing patrols are an essential service in Warrington, providing safety and peace of mind to thousands of children, parents, and guardians. As responsible members of this community, it is our duty to ensure that our children can travel to and from school safely. Unfortunately, recent proposals to eliminate these patrols put our children at risk, leaving pedestrians vulnerable, and disregarding the vital role these individuals play in maintaining traffic safety.
These patrol officers, known affectionately as "lollipop men and women," not only ensure the safe passage of our young ones across busy roads but also foster a sense of community and trust. Each day, they are out in all weather conditions, standing with bright attire and a smile, protecting the future generation from potential traffic hazards. It is disheartening to even consider the idea of making these dedicated individuals redundant.
According to a report by the Department for Transport, pedestrian casualties in the UK have significantly increased in areas where school crossing patrols have been reduced or removed. This clearly highlights the importance of maintaining, if not increasing, our current staffing levels.
While budget constraints are a reality for all councils, cutting costs at the expense of children’s safety is unacceptable. There are alternative solutions that can be considered such as reallocating funds, seeking sponsorships from local businesses, or even modest community fundraising efforts to support these patrols.
Our council must be urged to reassess their financial priorities and recognise the invaluable contribution these school crossing patrol staff make to our community. We cannot afford to compromise on safety for our children. We need the council to reinstate full funding for school crossing patrols in Warrington.
Join us in this critical cause to ensure our school crossing patrols remain active and fully supported. Sign this petition and help safeguard the lives of our community's young people.
