The Issue

The Saddledome in Calgary is not just an arena; it is a symbol of civic pride and cultural heritage. Built in 1983 for the Olympic Winter Games, it has hosted countless memorable events—from hockey games and concerts to exhibitions and community gatherings. Its unique saddle-shaped roof stands as an iconic piece of our city skyline. Yet, with plans for a new arena underway, the Scotiabank Saddledome is slated for demolition to make way for a surface parking lot.

This decision, driven purely by commercial interests, overlooks the true value the Saddledome brings to Calgary. This is not a nostalgia campaign; it is a civic-value intervention. Destroying such an integral landmark neither makes economic sense nor enriches our cultural landscape.

Calgary's citizens deserve better than the senseless loss of a structure that brings significant historical, cultural, and architectural value. Instead of tearing down the Saddledome, let's consider alternatives that could preserve the building while complementing the new development. This could include repurposing the structure into a multi-use facility, enhancing the community while retaining the building's iconic aesthetic.

Prominent figures such as Jim Kinnear have recognized the significance of the Saddledome, having been the first to give the building meaningful commercial backing two decades ago. They, along with numerous other stakeholders, see the folly in replacing this historical structure with a mere parking lot.

Economically, it makes no sense to replace a functional, beloved venue with nothing but empty asphalt. Culturally, it is shortsighted and destructive to erase a landmark of such significance.

Calgary's identity, vibrancy, and international reputation rely on preserving its historical sites, not demolishing them. We must encourage city officials to reconsider and find innovative solutions that honor our heritage while paving the way for future growth.

Join us in this plea to save our Saddledome. Let your voice be heard in advocating for a decision that respects Calgary's past while investing in its future. Sign this petition to show your support for retaining and repurposing the Scotiabank Saddledome.
