Save our reefs, national park, sea-life and Natural Nature.

Save our reefs, national park, sea-life and Natural Nature.
The Issue
- Environmental Impact: Dredging has the potential to disrupt aquatic ecosystems by removing sediment, which may contain nutrients, organic matter, and contaminants. This disturbance can harm the habitats of marine life, affect water quality, and disrupt the overall ecological balance of the ecosystem.
- Sediment Disposal: Properly disposing of the dredged sediment can be challenging, it can contaminate water bodies or surrounding land, leading to adverse effects on water quality and soil fertility. These sediments will settle on the surrounding coral reef and result in irreversible damage to the critical ecosystem.
- Habitat Destruction: Dredging activities can result in the destruction or disruption of natural habitats, such as wetlands, marshes, and spawning areas for aquatic species. The proposed project will dredge directly into the Admiraal Cockburn Land and Sea national Park which is illegal under the National Parks laws.
- Impact on Protected Areas: Bell Sound National Park, being connected to the wetland habitat, may also suffer from the impacts of the illegal canal and dredging. This could result in the loss of important habitats and disrupt the natural balance of the park's ecosystems.
- Increased Erosion: Dredging may alter the natural flow of water and sediment, potentially leading to increased erosion downstream. This erosion can result in the loss of valuable land, damage to infrastructure, and sedimentation in downstream areas.
- Loss of Freshwater Pond: The elimination of the only remaining freshwater pond on the island due to the proposed plan can have significant repercussions. Freshwater ponds play a vital role in supporting diverse wildlife, including migrating ducks, and their loss can disrupt the ecological balance and potentially lead to the decline of certain species.
- Jeopardizing Historical Wells: The potential loss of historical wells in the Highlands area due to the proposed plan is a matter of concern. These wells hold historical and cultural significance, and their preservation is important to maintain the island's heritage.
- Rerouting: our people will be prohibited from crossing over the other side of the island, leading to disruptions in daily life.
We believe the proposed dredging will have significant negative impacts on the environment and the people of South Caicos that far outweigh any potential benefits.
