Dear supporters,
Today we've launched a new call on Government to give Britain's native red squirrels the same legal protection already afforded to beavers.
At first glance, that may sound surprising.
Beavers, which were reintroduced to England after centuries of absence, were added to the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations in 2022.
Red squirrels, which have lived here for thousands of years, are not.
We believe that should change.
The proposal is supported by leading red squirrel conservationist Dr Craig Shuttleworth, who warned:
"It feels like we're not at the eleventh hour, but eleven seconds to midnight."
With more than 83,000 supporters behind Save Our Reds, we're making the case that stronger protection for red squirrel habitats could be achieved through a simple amendment to existing legislation.
