A new commemorative UK 2p coin now features the red squirrel – a powerful symbol of our natural heritage.
But while we recognise them in metal, we are still losing them in real life.
Across England, red squirrels are clinging on in a handful of fragile strongholds. Woodland habitats continue to be lost. Protections exist but too often they are not enforced.
It raises a simple question:
If red squirrels matter enough to appear on our currency… why are they not properly protected in our countryside?
This is why the Save Our Reds campaign continues to push for real change including enforcement of existing laws and meaningful habitat protection.
And this summer, the conversation will go further.
We will be supporting a wider call for wildlife to be represented on Bank of England banknotes – ensuring the species that define Britain are recognised not just symbolically, but through action.
Because symbolism alone is not enough.
If we want future generations to see red squirrels in the wild – not just on coins or banknotes – we need protection now.
