Causes of Climate Change:  🏭
The main cause of climate change is human activity, which involves burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and farming livestock. Fossil fuels create greenhouse gasses, which trap the sun’s heat into the atmosphere. Climate change primarily started due to the “Industrial Revolution” in the 18th century. The growth of machine technology. It began to sustain the growing population and economic growth in Great Britain, and would later spread throughout the world. The National Policy in Canada was created in the late 19th century by Sir John A. MacDonald in the Conservative Party. The creation of tariffs in that policy would further develop domestic industries, immigration helped influence the potential of agricultural sectors, and the Canadian Pacific Railway was also created to help establish the wheat economy in Canada. This would benefit the Canadian economy but caused consequences due to burning fossil fuels like coal. Today, most of Canada’s carbon emissions come from the energy sector. Fossil fuels have been burnt for power generation, and for fueling vehicles. Many people in Canada are concerned about the effects of climate change. The Federal Government of Canada continues to deal with the issues caused by climate change, and has created various plans. Plans like the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan and the net-zero emissions by 2050 Plan have been introduced. These plans don’t seem realistic enough to reach the goals as carbon emissions have risen by 20% in the last 3 decades. Since the Paris Agreement, Canada’s emissions have risen the most out of all G7 nations.

Consequences of Climate Change: ⚠️
The rising climate has led to many consequences involving various stakeholders. Many places have experienced a change in rainfall, frequent natural disasters, health threats, rising temperatures, and other issues. In Antarctica, glaciers are continuing to melt due to rising global temperatures. This causes a rise in sea level, which puts global coastal communities at risk. It is estimated by 2050, that 800 million people will be living in cities, and rising sea levels can cause up to 1 trillion dollars of damages. Industries like fishery are also highly at risk. Species like salmon and trout thrive in the cold, habitat loss is a threat to these species from heat-trapping pollutants in the oceans. Another issue that can lead to more consequences are droughts. Droughts can cause food insecurity due to the difficulty of growing crops. When the population doesn’t have access to food, they face food insecurity. This is why agricultural industries are affected by drought. The majority of these areas are in Africa, which causes some countries to be underdeveloped due to these climate issues. From the rising temperatures, pathogens are getting into our food. Healthcare issues like respiratory and heart illnesses can also be caused by rising temperatures. Canada has also been affected by these issues as of various industries, health, climate, occurrences of natural disasters, and our overall quality of life. Climate protests were held all around Canada from the inspiration of Swedish activist Greta Thunberg’s climate movements in 2022. Today Canadians continue to protest about climate change.

Solutions to Climate Change:  🪴
There are some solutions to this issue, but the issue is complicated. Education about the impacts of climate change will help develop an understanding of the issue. It will also make people more aware. The main solution starts with ending our reliance on fossil fuels, as it’s the largest contributor to climate change. Renewable energy sources can replace these fossil fuels, as technology grows. We are creating new types of clean energy sources, which are continuing to help us reach our 2030 goal, but if we want to reach it, we need to act faster. Renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydro, and other types of energy help us with sustainability by using parts of the environment to generate energy. Transportation is also a big contributor to greenhouse gases. The transportation plan is to create electric vehicles. This will reduce the amount of gas-powered vehicles. The installation of more public transportation will also help reduce the amount of carbon emissions. Improving the management of our forestry and other natural resources would also help with climate change solutions. The trees, plants, and soil are major carbon sinks on our planet, without them life on Earth would be nearly impossible. By creating responsible forestry policies, and regenerative agriculture, we can protect our ecosystems and our land. From those few solutions, we can understand how we can protect our land, and fight climate change, so we preserve our land for the generations to come.
