Save our Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

The Issue

The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum has been a cornerstone of our community for generations. Most of us have fond childhood memories of wandering its halls for hours on end. Through the years, this cherished institution has not only been a place of learning and wonder for countless children, but also a repository for our family histories, safeguarded within its walls thanks to our generous donations. It was a place where we brought our children and even our grandchildren to connect with the rich tapestry of our heritage.

WTAMU President Wendler and the Texas A&M System have failed us, the patrons and supporters of the museum, by not honoring the contract that stipulated the maintenance of the museum's historic buildings. This betrayal not only jeopardizes the physical structure of the museum but also puts at risk the invaluable artifacts and stories it holds.

The plan to sever ties with the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, an institution intrinsically linked with our identity and history, is an affront to our community and a blatant disregard for the Memorandum of Agreement between the A&M System and Panhandle-Plains Historical Society.

We call on WTAMU President Wendler and the Texas A&M System to honor their commitment to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. We demand that they halt any plans to sever ties and instead focus on reinforcing their pledge to preserve this vital institution.

The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is not just a building; it is the soul of our community, reflecting the history and aspirations of the Panhandle-Plains region. Imagine a future without this beacon of culture and history—a future where our stories have no home and where future generations are deprived of the opportunity to explore their roots. We owe it not only to ourselves but to future generations to ensure that the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum remains in Canyon at in its current location.

Please lend your voice to our cause by signing this petition. Together, we can send a powerful message to Chancellor Glenn Hegar and A&M Board of Regents,  that our history matters and must be preserved. Save our Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum now.
