Save The Ridge: Protect West Valley City's Open Space and Community Asset

Dear West Valley City Leaders,

Thirty-five years ago, the visionaries who led West Valley City made a significant investment by setting aside open space to create The Ridge Golf Course. Over the years, this cherished public resource has grown into more than just a golf course; it has become a vital community gathering place and a destination for golfers throughout the Wasatch Front. The Ridge not only brings revenue to our city but also supports local businesses, creating lasting memories for families, friends, and visitors.

Sadly, unelected officials, including the city manager and some members of the city council, are now proposing to sell The Ridge for development, jeopardizing this valuable community asset.

Why The Ridge Matters:

A Gathering Place for All: The Ridge has become a hub for people of all ages and abilities to come together and enjoy golf. Golf is a wholesome, family-friendly activity that teaches essential life values such as honesty, respect, integrity, discipline, and self-control—values that are critical to building a strong, healthy community.
A Legacy Asset: The recently renovated clubhouse, with its stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains, has hosted countless special events such as weddings, reunions, and other celebrations. The Ridge is not just a golf course; it’s an integral part of the fabric of our community.
Publicly Owned & Irreplaceable: The Ridge is a publicly owned asset that enhances the quality of life for all West Valley City residents, whether or not they play golf. It should not be sold off to fill a temporary budget gap or for private development that benefits a select few.
Protecting Public Health and Environment: The Ridge’s green space plays a critical role in supporting local wildlife, including mule deer, red-tailed foxes, and migratory birds. Additionally, studies show that golf courses capture carbon and improve air quality—an especially important factor given the air quality issues in the Salt Lake Valley. The nearly 200 acres of The Ridge helps capture over 150 tons of carbon annually, benefiting both the environment and public health.
The Risks of Overdevelopment:

We know that overdevelopment can have a devastating impact on quality of life. Increased traffic, pollution, and the loss of open space diminish the very things that make West Valley City a great place to live. Once this land is sold off and developed, it’s gone for good. We cannot afford to lose another vital green space

A Call for Responsible Leadership:

We ask our city leaders to be stewards of the public’s assets, not to sell them off for short-term gain. Just as we manage our household budgets by spending responsibly, our leaders should manage city finances and tax dollars with the same care—by preserving and protecting what truly matters for the long-term well-being of the community.

A Message from our city leaders:

“We are pleased to continue to preserve and protect the valuable assets of the city for the benefit of those who live, work, and play here.”
— West Valley City Website

We agree! And we believe our elected officials should honor that commitment by preserving The Ridge and all open space assets for the public good.

What’s Next?

If The Ridge is sold, what other public spaces will be at risk? Our parks, playgrounds, and recreational areas all contribute to the high quality of life in West Valley City. We must stand together to preserve these spaces for future generations.

Take Action:

If you oppose the sale of The Ridge, add your voice to this petition. Let our city leaders know that our open spaces belong to all of us, and selling them off for development is not the answer.

Furthermore, we call on all our city leaders to adopt a resolution preserving all publicly owned open space ensuring better air, improving the quality of life for our community and for future generations.

SAVE OUR OPEN SPACES! SAVE THE RIDGE!
