Do we really need more habitat-destroying development in our area?

To give everyone an idea of just how much koala habitat has been cleared in our area already, here is a visual image of examples of current clearing and development within just a two-kilometre radius of the Lawnton Koala Reserve and neighbouring Proposed Lot 101 (3.372 hectares). We all know that there is a desperate housing shortage in Moreton Bay and country wide. However, at least 36.83 hectares is being cleared for housing and services within this two-kilometre radius.

The development plans for these respective developments outline the construction of at least seven hundred new houses within just a two-kilometre range of the Lawnton Koala Reserve and Proposed Lot 101. That’s seven hundred new families within the next year or so in our area, and an extra 700 to 1,400 cars on our already heavily congested roads.

Last week, a local resident filmed a koala walking on the sidewalk of Francis Road outside the Lawnton Koala Reserve attempting to cross busy commuter traffic in the dark. (Please click here to view this footage! https://youtu.be/dqp71sQ_z5Q)

With the break-neck pace of clearing and development being undertaken in our urban areas, it is all the more imperative for the Moreton Bay City Council and Queensland Government to prioritise core koala habitat.

Purchasing Proposed Lot 101 will extend the Lawnton Koala Reserve and will help to provide our koalas and all other resident native animals with a greater area of sanctuary they so desperately need.

It is absolutely vital for Council to factor in secure green spaces with urban planning. Let Proposed Lot 101 be one such green space that is not destroyed like so many others in our area.  

We call on the Moreton Bay City Council and Queensland Government to buy back this land.
