The Issue

My family has deep roots with Fremont Elementary School in Fremont, NC. My grandfather and father graduated from Fremont Schools, and I attended Fremont until the ninth grade before moving on to Wayne County Schools. My son and daughter are also proud alumni, having graduated from sixth grade at this venerable institution. This school is not just a building; it is a cornerstone of both my family's history and our community's legacy.

Fremont Elementary School, constructed in 1923, has stood as a beacon of education, community, and camaraderie for a century. More than just a place of learning, it has been a gathering spot, a safe haven, and a cultural hub. The school's rich history represents the dedication and commitment of Fremont's citizens who built it as an emblem of hope for their children’s future. We have a remarkable opportunity to preserve this cherished historic landmark and breathe new life into it.

Unfortunately, there is a risk that this integral edifice could suffer from neglect, obsolescence, or even demolition. Letting Fremont School fall into disuse would mean losing a part of our identity as a community. Instead, we propose to preserve and repurpose the building so that it can continue to serve future generations.

Revitalizing Fremont Elementary School could include transforming it into a community center, housing local events, learning programs, and various activities for all ages. This adaptive reuse not only conserves our history but also aligns with sustainable practices by reducing the need for new construction.

Empirical data supports the benefits of preserving historical buildings. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, retaining historic buildings can enhance community pride, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to an area’s unique identity. Furthermore, heritage conservation can increase property values and foster local tourism.

We appeal to the Wayne County Board of Education, Town of Fremont and stakeholders to work collaboratively with preservation experts and the community to develop a viable plan that keeps the spirit of Fremont School alive for another hundred years.

Please add your voice to ours. Help us preserve our history for future generations. Sign this petition and urge local authorities to take immediate action to save Fremont Elementary School.

The Decision Makers

Eddie Yelverton
Fremont Town Mayor
Responded
The Town of Fremont is fully supportive of the Fremont Forward group who are trying to purchase the Historic Fremont School from the Wayne County Board of Education. The plans are to make the Building into a Community Center and to repurpose the field area into a recreation area for use by our Community. I strongly encourage everyone to sign a petition so we can show the Wayne County Board of Education our support for our Historic School. Mayor Eddie Yelverton
