The Issue

We, the undersigned, are asking South Lanarkshire Council to reconsider plans to build houses on our beloved Westwoodhill amenity space and children’s play area. This green space has been a vital part of our community, providing a safe and enjoyable place for families and children to gather, play, relax and seek health benefits.

Westwoodhill is a designated ‘Priority Greenspace’ which means it’s a part of the ‘green infrastructure’ which brings social, economic and ecological benefits to the town of East Kilbride. A main benefit is the ability of local people to access space to support good mental and physical wellbeing. This space is used by all generations for exercise, sports, dog walking, cycling, etc. These activities keep local people fit and healthy. This greenspace also acts as a vital ecosystem that supports biodiversity and improves air quality.

Sadly, over the years, our local amenities have been neglected, and the loss of Westwoodhill would be a real blow to the heart of our community. If this development moves forward, it could set the stage for other valuable green spaces in East Kilbride to be lost as well.

Despite the systematic rundown of this greenspace by the council in recent years it’s still a popular space for local people.

We believe that our open greenspace is crucial for the well-being of everyone in the area and this is why this petition is named Save our Green Space (SOS)

We are asking the Council to:

  • Stop the plans to build on Westwoodhill amenity green space.
  • Invest in our local recreational amenities, so they continue to serve the community for years to come.
  • Listen to what the community wants and keep our green spaces safe for everyone to enjoy.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for our community and saying that green spaces matter. Together, we can make sure future generations of families will have the same access to greenspace that we have today.

Thank you.
