These facilities guzzle massive amounts of water for cooling—up to five million gallons a day per large center, equal to what a town of 10,000 to 50,000 people uses.  U.S. data centers already consume over 17 billion gallons directly each year, and that’s before counting the billions more needed to generate their electricity. 

In places like Northern Virginia, usage jumped 63% from 2019 to 2023, forcing utilities to pull drinking water instead of recycled sources.  AI is making it worse—one prompt can use as much water as a bottle, and billions of queries add up fast.
