We are rapidly losing the green lungs of South-West Nigeria.
The catastrophic rate of deforestation in Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos States has reached a critical tipping point. Driven by seemingly unregulated commercial logging, aggressive real estate expansion, and uncontrolled  production, our forests are disappearing before our eyes.
If we do not act right now, the environmental, economic, and health consequences will be irreversible for millions of residents in the South-West.
## Why This Matters to Every Citizen in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states.

Ogun State's Reserves Under Siege: Crucial biodiversity hotspots like the [Omo Forest Reserve](https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/g/11h79tpqrs are being decimated by uncontrolled timber merchants and clearing, driving rare wildlife out and destroying vital ecosystems.
* Oyo’s Woodland Loss to Charcoal etc: Mass tree felling for commercial charcoal production and exports are turning fertile woodlands into degraded wasteland, accelerating soil erosion and directly threatening regional food security.
* Lagos Mangrove Destruction: Unchecked urban sprawl and coastal real estate developments are wiping out precious mangrove forests. This leaves Lagos heavily vulnerable to rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and devastating flash floods.
* Severe Heatwaves and Flooding: The massive loss of our regional tree cover worsens the urban heat island effect, making our cities hotter and intensifying floods that paralyze businesses and displace families.

Local enforcement seems to have failed to stop powerful commercial interests and illegal developers who exploit weak state penalties and under-resourced forest guards.

We as citizens need a unified, high-level political intervention immediately.

We are calling on the Governors of Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos States, along with their respective Commissioners for Environment, to collaboratively implement these four urgent measures:

   1. Launch a Joint South-West Forest Taskforce: Establish a unified enforcement team to patrol shared state borders, crack down on timber smuggling, and evict illegal loggers from protected reserves.
   2. Mandate Green Belts in Urban Planning: Enforce strict zoning laws in Lagos and expanding urban centers in Ogun and Oyo that legally protect natural green buffers, wetlands, and forests from developers.
   3. Impose Heavy Criminal Penalties: Review state forestry laws to introduce severe financial fines and mandatory prison sentences for individuals and corporate bodies engaged in unauthorized land clearing.
   4. Fund Community Reforestation & Clean Energy: Invest heavily in community-led tree-planting campaigns using indigenous species, while subsidizing clean cooking alternatives to eliminate the reliance on wood charcoal.
