Save our corner shop from demolition

The Issue

Our Blue Corner Shop [Thiriza Off Licence] is going to be demolished and replaced with a residential building.

This will have a devasting impact on the owner and his family, who will lose their livelihood which they have worked so hard to build for 20 years! This will have an impact on us as a community because we will be losing a key part of our daily lives. The owner and his family have seen me grow up from a toddler to a woman in her 20s! We cannot underplay how significant they are to this community. We all rely on this shop at any time, for any occasion and all our necessities.

A deep sense of community will be lost if this shop is demolished. The friendly service, the familiar faces and the special memories will all be gone if we do not reject this planning notice.

How else will this impact you?

  • The demolition and construction of a new building will be loud and disruptive
  • Loss of access to a local shop where you can buy necessities
  • More road traffic - having to go elsewhere to shop and because of the construction
  • Loss of history and culture - corner shops are the cornerstone of British life and the heart of communities like ours
  • Urban gentrification - building houses in this area that we cannot afford leads landlords to increase our rent

We must act NOW. We must get the attention of Planning Officer Sajjad Dar (sajjad.dar@newham.gov.uk)  to stop him from going ahead with the demolition.

Gentrification is creeping up in this area. Have your rent prices increased? Are you struggling to keep up with the cost of living in this area?

If this shop is gone, we could be next!
