Save our Camp Silverado - Kit Carson, CA

Save our Camp Silverado - Kit Carson, CA
The Issue
The time for action is now –
Mount Diablo Silverado Council [MDSC] BSA has to make a decision about Camp Silverado.
· The United States Forest Service [USFS] annual Use Permit obligations have not been met
· Attempts to sell the camp improvements to a ‘for profit’ business named Mt. Camp has failed
· Illusions to sub-let camp to Mt. Camp are in violation of the USFS Use Permit
· Amador County Health Department has closed the camp due to water quality
· MSDC or Mt. Camp have made no attempts of maintenance or improvements to the camp in 3 years
· MDSC is liable for “return to forest” conditions if camp is abandoned – estimated expense at $500,000 plus
It is clear that the wisest course of action for the camp and the council would be to gift the camp improvements over to a non-profit organization Friends of Camp Silverado that would then meet the USFS Use Permit expectations and continue the obligations to the USFS enjoyed by the Boy Scouts of America. Thus allowing FOCS to develop the camp back to its’ once great high sierra camp status and open to youth groups of all designs.
FOCS is made up of Camp Silverado Staff Alumni that have years of camping, backpacking, camp management and youth educational background. Its’ purpose will be to raise funds, maintain camp facilities and develop programs that allow for youth campers to explore and enjoy the high sierra adventure from Camp Silverado’s splendor once again.
