The Issue

Harrington Park in San Carlos is one of the few places in our city that still feels natural, shaded, and welcoming. Families gather here, children play, and the beloved sculpture of the juggling man adds a unique, iconic charm that makes this park truly special.

Now, the City plans to remove ten mature, protected trees to build a new public restroom. If this happens, the park’s shaded heart will be replaced with more concrete, creating a heat-trapping, soulless space. The natural canopy will be gone for decades — newly planted saplings take years to grow large enough to provide meaningful shade and the same ecological benefits.

We, the undersigned, urge the San Carlos City Council and Planning Commission to:

1. Reconsider the restroom’s location or design to preserve as many mature trees as possible.

2. Protect natural shade and avoid adding unnecessary hardscape that contributes to urban heat.

3. Preserve the park’s iconic character, including the balancing act sculpture, which gives Harrington Park its unique identity.

Harrington Park doesn’t need to become another concrete space. Let’s keep it green, shaded, and full of life — the way it has always been, and the way our community loves it.

The design has already been approved by the Planning Commission — so we need to act fast before this treasured park loses both its shade and character. Please sign and share to protect the trees, wildlife, and iconic charm that make Harrington Park special.
