Save Oregon's Owyhee Canyonlands
The Issue
Act now to protect truly spectacular Oregon wildlands and rivers!
In the heart of southeastern Oregon lies a wild, rugged landscape carved by the Owyhee River and lined with steep basalt walls. Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands embody the iconic American West defined by wide open spaces, deep river canyons, and rolling sagebrush hills. It is home to one of the nation’s largest herds of bighorn sheep, native trout, raptors, imperiled greater sage-grouse, and to a treasure trove of human history and culture.
Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands encompass the largest unprotected wild area in the Lower 48 states. But remoteness will no longer preserve the Owyhee: Development pressure and impacts are coming. Damage from irresponsible all-terrain vehicle use is already here, and mining could be next.
Let Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) know that you support safeguarding this magnificent landscape!
Permanently protecting the Owyhee Canyonlands would help the local economy and could provide certainty for ranchers who may continue to graze their herds, while boosting businesses through recreation and tourism. Legal roads and routes would remain open, guaranteeing access for those who hike, camp, hunt, fish, and explore.
With few places like it in the world, it is an essential piece of rich American history and deserving of permanent protection. Time is running out to save irreplaceable public lands owned by us all—please sign the petition today!
