Save Old Rhos Street School – Before It’s Gone Forever
The Issue
The historic Rhos Street School in Ruthin is under serious threat. If plans go ahead, this beautiful and irreplaceable building could be demolished and replaced with new housing — and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
Rhos Street School is not just an old building. It has stood at the heart of Ruthin since the 1840s, educating generations of local families and shaping the town we know today. Built in 1848, it is a rare and meaningful reminder of Ruthin’s history, community spirit, and commitment to education. Many of us — or our parents and grandparents — have personal connections to this place.
We are calling on Denbighshire County Council, Cadw, and planning authorities to urgently step in, stop demolition plans, and properly assess the building for listed status and protection.
The Wrong Development in the Wrong Place
While we understand the need for new homes, this site is completely unsuitable. Rhos Street is already one of the busiest roads in Ruthin, used daily by residents, hospital traffic, ambulances, delivery vans, bin lorries, postmen, and pedestrians.
Cramming around 20 new houses into this small, restricted site would:
Increase traffic and parking chaos
Create constant noise, disruption, and safety risks
Put pressure on residents living on Rhos Street and above the school
Disrupt hospital access and emergency services
Overload already stretched water, electricity, gas, and drainage systems
During construction alone, residents would face large lorries, work vans, dust, mess, and noise in a very tight space. This would seriously affect daily life and wellbeing — not just for a few people, but for a large part of the community.
What We Stand to Lose
Rhos Street School has stood for nearly two centuries. It is part of Ruthin’s identity. Demolishing it would erase a vital piece of our shared history — something that can never be rebuilt.
Across the UK, communities are choosing to reuse and repurpose historic buildings, not tear them down. This approach protects heritage, supports sustainability, and reduces the environmental impact of new builds.
A Better Future for the Building
Instead of demolition, there is a real opportunity to reuse Rhos Street School for the benefit of the whole community.
Many residents support the idea of adapting the building for health services, linked to the nearby hospital. Ruthin has lost essential facilities such as A&E and X-ray services, forcing people to travel to Denbigh Infirmary or Glan Clwyd Hospital.
This is especially hard for elderly residents, vulnerable people, and those without access to a car. Bringing services such as diagnostics, urgent care, NHS dental services, or other community health facilities back into Ruthin would:
Reduce pressure on larger hospitals
Support local residents
Make better use of an existing, well-located historic building
This Is Our Moment
This is not about being anti-housing.
It’s about common sense.
It’s about choosing the right place for development and protecting what makes Ruthin special.
We have a chance to:
Save a historic landmark
Protect residents from unnecessary disruption
Preserve Ruthin’s character
Create something genuinely useful for the community
Please don’t let Rhos Street School be lost forever.
