Save New Mills squash court
The Issue
Save the New Mills Squash Court
There are some proposed changes on the horizon for New Mills Leisure Centre that we want to bring to your attention. The council is considering replacing the squash court with a wellness centre, (aimed at supporting the rehabilitation of individuals with long-term illnesses).
While we understand the importance of promoting wellness, the users of the squash court have banded together to express strong opposition to its proposed destruction based on the following key points:
• While the idea of a wellness centre is valuable, both facilities can coexist.
• Dismantling the purpose-built squash court, is deemed illogical and irreversible, considering austerity and the significant cost of rebuilding it.
• The proposed wellness centre's primary specialist requirement is privacy, suggesting numerous alternative location options.
• Removing the squash court would have a detrimental effect on local physical activity for various age groups.
• The proposal contradicts the council's Move More strategy and worsens inactivity in the area.
• The squash court is a flourishing part of the community, hosting various sessions (ladies/men's/juniors/box league) and competitive league matches.
• Importantly it’s a venue that has value to people of all ages and brings generations together for a shared activity.
• Squash is an accessible and cheap sport, and having the facility on the doorstep encourages participation, especially for those who might find it challenging to travel to another town.
• Only two squash venues currently exist in the entire High Peak and removing one would leave a significant gap.
• The reported estimate of 80 unique users is a gross underestimate, with around 200 actual users over three months.
The community is urging the council to reconsider this decision and is actively requesting a public consultation to ensure their voices are heard.
