The Issue

We are deeply concerned over the recent decision to pause admissions to the Music Education program at McGill University. We respectfully urge the University to reverse this decision, which has far-reaching consequences for the future of music education in Quebec and across Canada.

This program plays a vital role in training highly skilled, passionate educators who bring the life-changing benefits of music to students and communities. McGill’s program is not only one of the most respected in the country—it is also the only English-language music education program in Quebec. Pausing it severely limits access for English-speaking students who aspire to become music educators, and threatens the availability of qualified teachers in English schools across the province.

Music education is essential. It enhances academic achievement, supports mental health, fosters social connection, and cultivates creativity. At a time when students need these benefits more than ever, decisions that reduce the availability of trained music educators will have long-term negative impacts on our schools and society.

Furthermore, this decision disrupts the pipeline of music teachers at a time when the profession is already facing critical shortages. It will be felt not only in Quebec, but across Canada, as McGill graduates have historically filled teaching positions nationwide.

McGill has long stood for excellence, accessibility, and leadership in education. I urge you to uphold those values by reinstating admissions to the Music Education program and ensuring that this crucial path remains open to future generations.

Please reopen admissions while the review is conducted and publicly commit to maintaining the program long-term.
