The Issue

As a school social worker in Newaygo County, I work with students who face food insecurity, housing instability, truancy, and generational trauma. I witness how systemic barriers impact their ability to show up—physically, emotionally, and academically. Success Coaches are often the first to identify those barriers and connect families to real solutions. Their presence in our schools builds trust, provides consistency, and meets families where they are.

Michigan’s Pathways to Potential program places Success Coaches directly in schools to support children and families with housing, food, attendance, and crisis intervention—before harm happens. This proactive approach is critical in preventing crises by engaging with families early, thereby laying a foundation for stronger communities and better individual outcomes.

Unfortunately, the state of Michigan is planning to eliminate this vital program in the FY 2025–26 budget. This decision could have devastating effects on our most vulnerable students, stripping them of crucial support systems that address urgent needs before they escalate into crises.

Governor Whitmer and Michigan lawmakers have a responsibility to their constituents to preserve this life-saving program. Investing in early intervention not only supports children and families but also reduces the long-term social and economic costs associated with neglect and delayed intervention. Statistics show that early intervention not only improves attendance and educational achievements but also leads to a decrease in dropouts, juvenile delinquency, and subsequent unemployment.

We urge Governor Whitmer and Michigan lawmakers to reconsider and prioritize early intervention and prevention for our students. By preserving the Pathways to Potential program, we can ensure that our children and families continue to receive the support they need to thrive.
