The Issue
Request to Preserve the Historic Mendon City Square Playground
We, the undersigned residents, parents, and concerned members of the Mendon community, strongly urge Mendon City Corporation to reconsider the planned demolition of the Mendon City Square playground located just north of City Hall.
For nearly 25 years, this playground has served as a central gathering place for families, children, and visitors of all ages. It is more than just a play structure—it is a part of our community's history, culture, and daily life.
Our Concerns:
- Reduced Access to Recreation: While alternate playgrounds are mentioned, they are not within walking distance for many residents, particularly younger children. Kids play in the park every day, while there currently are 2 scheduled meetings for the city hall in the month of April.
- Priorities and Transparency: Replacing essential recreational space for a government expansion—even with a future playground "in planning"—feels shortsighted, especially without thorough community consultation or a finalized replacement plan.
- Timing and Uncertainty: The City notes that a replacement may take "a summer or two" to complete.
- Loss of a Beloved Landmark: The City Square playground is deeply cherished and embedded in family memories across generations.
Our Request:
We respectfully request that the City:
- Postpone demolition of the current playground until a replacement is built and fully accessible.
- Provide a detailed, public plan for the new playground, including budget, layout, and completion timeline.
- Explore alternative construction designs that preserve the playground while accommodating the new meeting room.
Engage with the public through town halls or surveys before final decisions are made. - Mendon thrives because of its strong community spirit, and decisions like this deserve full transparency, consideration, and involvement from the families it most affects.
We urge you to put community first and preserve our children’s space as you move forward with city improvements.
