Save McGill Golf

The Issue

For over a century, McGill Varsity Golf has been a meaningful and enduring part of the University’s athletic landscape. As one of McGill’s long-standing competitive programs, it has showcased student-athletes who balance academics and sport at a high level, contributing to a culture of perseverance, integrity, and school pride. Its removal represents the erasure of an important chapter of McGill’s athletic heritage and a departure from the University’s stated commitments to excellence, opportunity, and student development.

The recent and unexpected decision, led by Daniel Méthot (Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation) and Lisen Moore (Manager of Intercollegiate Sports), to discontinue the Varsity Golf Team has left athletes, alumni, and supporters deeply concerned. What has troubled the community most is the lack of transparency, the absence of meaningful consultation, and the failure to provide clear rationale for the decision. Information has been sparse, timelines unclear, and stakeholders were not engaged before or after the program was cut.

This is especially difficult to understand given that our program currently fields three national team members, has had one of its strongest competitive seasons in recent memory, including a first-place finish, and has qualified to represent McGill at Nationals in June 2026. At a moment of competitive success and growing momentum, the program was dissolved without the open dialogue, data, or explanation that student-athletes should reasonably expect.

For decades, McGill Golf has offered students a positive, developmental, and community-building varsity experience. It has connected the University with local and national golf communities, provided leadership opportunities, and strengthened McGill’s athletic identity. Ending the program abruptly, without transparent communication or collaborative problem-solving, undermines that history and ignores the voices of those directly affected.

We believe McGill Athletics & Recreation owes the community a full and honest explanation of how this decision was made, what criteria were used, and why no consultation process was undertaken. A transparent review is necessary to understand the factors involved and explore alternatives that could preserve the team.

We urge McGill University to reconsider the discontinuation of the Varsity Golf Team and to engage athletes, alumni, and coaches in a respectful and open process. Such collaboration aligns with McGill’s mission and ensures future generations of student-athletes can benefit from "academic and athletic excellence by supporting the student-athlete experience through facilities, leadership, and a strong wellness program."

We call upon students, alumni, faculty, and community members to sign this petition and stand with us in advocating for the reinstatement of McGill’s Varsity Golf Team. Together, we can ensure that McGill’s legacy is protected, and that decisions are made with integrity, transparency, and respect for the students who represent the University.
