By the beginning of the 2026-27 academic school year, there will be a huge change in the music program at Mayfield Secondary School.

Mayfield has been offering jazz repertoire courses since the early 1990’s, and our ensembles have been a part of Mayfield’s history for almost 40 years. Due to cuts from the board, the students and teachers had recently been informed that 3 of the 4 courses would be cut and no longer running. Going into the 2026-27 school year, the Mayfield Music Department will no longer be the same as it had felt since these courses first started.

Our ensembles/courses such as Magnetics and Blues Alley, are award winning and are given lots of opportunity. Performing, being involved in workshops, and getting feedback along with first-hand learning opportunities from professionals, are just a few of the amazing opportunities that our students have. Without the courses, the student's learning experiences aren't as quality as it would be.

Students commit and devote their time for these courses to develop skills (musical/real world skills), and to build confidence and community. The abandonment of these courses would really negatively impact the students at Mayfield as now they won’t have these opportunities. There is a large population of students at Mayfield who have an extremely deep passion for music, and the stripping of these courses would also feel like the stripping of part of Mayfield Music’s identity.

The goal of the Mayfield Repertoire Project is to bring as much attention to this issue as we can. We want people to realize how important these courses are to us and our school, and how the removal of these courses will negatively impact the students at Mayfield.
