The Issue

Martin University in Indianapolis—a beacon of opportunity for Black, older, and first-generation college students—is being forced to halt classes after this semester due to financial and enrollment issues. This decision is not just a disruption to students' education—it’s a blow to equity, justice, and the long-standing promise of access to higher education in Indiana.

Students like Ta’Hona “Kween” Zackery chose Martin because it was the closest thing to an HBCU in Indiana, offering a sense of cultural belonging and support rarely found elsewhere. Now, without warning or transparency, that path is being taken from them. Students and faculty learned of the university’s pause through the same email, with no clear next steps, leaving dreams and degrees hanging in the balance.

This closure cannot go unchallenged.

Martin University has long served students who are older than 24, working adults, and those traditionally left out of mainstream education systems. Its role is vital—especially as efforts to undermine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are sweeping the country. State Rep. John Bartlett called the situation an "atrocity," pointing out that pulling support from Martin is directly aligned with the political attacks on Black-led institutions and DEI programs across the U.S.

Earlier this year, Indiana Governor Mike Braun rescinded a $10 million grant that had been allocated to support Martin University. Community members raised concerns and tried to intervene but were dismissed by the university’s board. Now, students, families, and alumni are left asking: why weren’t their warnings taken seriously?

We call on the Martin University Board of Trustees, Governor Mike Braun, and Indiana's legislative leadership to immediately halt the shutdown plans, reinstate state financial support, and create a transparent, community-led plan to stabilize and rebuild Martin University.

We cannot allow Indiana’s only predominantly Black institution to disappear without a fight. Students deserve answers. The community deserves respect. And Indiana deserves a future where access to education isn’t sacrificed for politics.
