The issue

Randwick city council is planning to implement parking meters at our beloved beach and throughout our surrounding suburbs. This decision threatens to undermine the very fabric of our community, and we must take action now to prevent this from happening.

There are no guarantees to residents regarding parking meter rules, regulations, protocols, costs or quantity of resident free permits. Additionally, once these meters are installed then anything can change. The future will not be safe.

One of the most immediate and damaging consequences of this plan is the financial burden it will place on our community. Visitors, including our beloved grandparents and low-income families, will now have to pay simply to spend time with us at our own residences and beach. This not only limits access to one of our cherished public spaces but also marginalizes those who may already be struggling to make ends meet. Every household will be restricted to just one resident parking permit, severely limiting our ability to host family and friends without incurring further parking fees.

Additionally, the council's intent to use the funds generated from these parking meters to cover the costs of beach maintenance overlooks the fact that we already contribute substantially through various local taxes. It is unfair to further burden residents with these fees when funds could potentially be sourced through other means that do not penalize locals, and local visitors.

If allowed to proceed, this initiative will not only deter tourists , crush local business, but also drive up parking costs even further over time, as has been seen in other areas. This risks turning our beach community into a less welcoming, vibrant, and accessible place for both residents and visitors alike. Our beautiful beaches should remain a place for all to enjoy without unnecessary financial barriers.

We urge Mayor Dylan Parker of Randwick City council to reconsider this plan and explore alternative funding solutions. Engage with the community to develop sustainable financial strategies that do not restrict access to our public spaces.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against measures that would harm our community, disrupt the lives of residents, and reduce the accessibility of our beaches for everyone. Together, we can preserve the welcoming and inclusive spirit of our local area.
