Save Manly West Before & After School Care (BASC) for our community!
The issue
The Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association at Manly West Public School recently voted to privatise our beloved Before and After School Care (BASC) program. This abrupt move threatens to shift the focus from nurturing our children to prioritising profits. And removes the ability of profits to be donated to the school to improve the education resources and/or the school environment. As a community deeply invested in the well-being of our children, we must unite to reclaim the BASC and ensure it remains in the hands of those who truly care—us, the community.
Points to consider
- BASC Committee has been full of volunteers every year
- BASC has donated approximately 1.2 million to the school since 2006
-BASC has been operating by the support of the amazing staff and volunteers for 31 years.
- MW P&C is incorporated which shields its members from liability outlined in the CGU Association Liability PDS
- B.A.S.C staff have recently secured permission from the principal to provide Holiday Care
- The P&C had a motion to employ a General Manager which was approved by the executive to provide support to the whole of the P&C including BASC
Private operators often prioritize profit over the personal connections and commitment that thrive within community-driven initiatives. Our children deserve quality care that fosters their growth, nurtures their individuality, and enriches their experience beyond school hours. Privatization jeopardises these values by potentially cutting costs and increasing fees at the expense of care quality.
Moreover, transparency is crucial in decisions affecting our children’s welfare. The lack of community consultation in this decision underscores the need for greater involvement from all stakeholders, particularly the parents who entrust their children to the BASC daily. The importance of a community-focused model cannot be overstated. It assures accountability, cultivates trust, and emphasizes child-centered practices.
This is a critical time for us to act. It is not too late to reverse this decision and demand a reevaluation that includes our voices. We urge everyone in the Manly West School Community, and beyond who values community-driven care and transparency to join us in this fight. Your signature can amplify our call for fairness, ensuring that our children's care remains a priority over profit.
Let us stand together and advocate for a nurturing environment that truly reflects our community’s values. Sign this petition to urge the P&C to reverse their decision and reclaim our BASC for the benefit of our children and community. Together, we can make a difference. Sign now!
