‘Vashi mangrove patch covered in debris’
MUMBAI: A Navi Mumbai resident has filed a complaint with the state government that mangrove forests, spread over four hectares near Vashi village, are covered in construction debris.

The mangroves spread over four hectares near Vashi village are covered in debris, the complainant has said.
The state government took cognisance of the complaint on Friday and asked the state urban development department to look into the issue.

Navi Mumbai resident BN Kumar said, “Debris dumping is going on during night for the last one week. The location is very close to the Vashi toll naka and mangrove trees on both sides of a kilometre are destroyed.”

The destruction of mangrove forests across the state and construction within 50m of mangrove areas was banned by the Bombay high court in 2005.

“We have informed our environment cell about the alleged violation and directed them to investigate the site. We will ensure security in the area during night time,” said Mohan Ninawe, senior public relations officer, Cidco.

An official from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation said they will initiate action if the forest department confirms a violation. Meanwhile, Bombay HC wetland grievance committee member, JR Gowda, said, “Our forest officers will take stock of the extent of destruction and then investigate the matter.”
