Save Mangar Bani Now: Our Paleolithic Heritage at Risk

The Issue

Mangar Bani, located in the heart of the National Capital Region, is a pristine forest nestled in the Aravalli hills of Haryana. This forest is a lifeline for the local communities who revere it as a sacred grove. It was a huge revelation to us, during our recent visit, to discover that Mangar Bani holds significant cultural and historical value with its ancient Gudariya Das Baba temple and Paleolithic rock art. However, the threats to Mangar Bani are escalating rapidly. Despite a Supreme Court directive in July 2021 to protect this area, necessary actions have stalled, leaving the forest and its treasures vulnerable to destruction. The Haryana Archaeological Department initially showed interest, but there has been no subsequent intervention. The forest is now prey to illegal mining, commercial development, and deforestation.

At stake is the very essence of our heritage. Mangar Bani is home to invaluable prehistoric rock art and cave paintings that date back to the Paleolithic era, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. These artifacts are irreplaceable; once lost, they cannot be recovered. The forest’s ecological balance, which supports a wide range of biodiversity, is also in jeopardy. If the current destructive activities continue, we risk losing not only a crucial part of our history but also a vital natural habitat.

Now is the time to act because the threats to Mangar Bani are escalating rapidly. Immediate action is crucial to designate Mangar Bani as a protected archaeological and ecological site, to promote sustainable development, and to raise public awareness about its significance. We must act now to safeguard this invaluable heritage for future generations before it is irreversibly lost. Prime Minister, your decisive action can ensure that Mangar Bani remains a testament to our rich cultural and natural legacy.
