Save Malmesbury’s Forest and Natural Veld – Stop the Rezoning and Development
The Issue
We, the residents of Malmesbury, oppose the proposed rezoning and development of the Eucalyptus forest and the surrounding natural veld. This development would cause permanent damage to our environment, community spaces, and the rural character of our town.
This area is more than just land — it is a daily refuge for walkers, runners, cyclists, families and nature lovers. It is also a home to diverse wildlife and an essential natural buffer against climate and water-related challenges.
Why we object:
1. A vital community and recreational space will be lost
The forest is one of the few accessible green areas in Malmesbury. It is used every day for exercise, relaxation and mental well-being. Once it is replaced with housing, this space will be gone forever.
2. Irreplaceable biodiversity will be destroyed
The forest, though not indigenous, has existed for decades and now supports owls, hawks, birdlife, bees and other pollinators.
The neighbouring indigenous veld contains Fynbos and native plant species, part of a globally significant biodiversity hotspot.
Development will fragment and destroy this habitat permanently.
3. The forest plays a key role in climate and temperature regulation
These trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide shade, cool the air and help regulate the local microclimate. Removing them will increase temperatures and contribute to the urban heat island effect.
4. Water and flood risks will increase
Replacing natural ground with roofs, tar and concrete means more stormwater runoff, less groundwater recharge, and a higher risk of local flooding and pollution.
600 new households will place far more strain on water resources and drainage systems than the current forest and veld do.
5. Loss of rural character and dangerous precedent
This landscape defines the identity and character of Malmesbury. If this development is approved, it sets a precedent for future destruction of green spaces across our town.
What we are asking for
We support responsible development — but not at the cost of natural spaces that cannot be replaced.
We call on the Planning Committee to:
✔ Reject the rezoning and development application
✔ Recognise the forest and veld as a valuable community and ecological asset
✔ Explore alternative, sustainable solutions that preserve this land for future generations
Add your voice. Protect this land — for our community, our children, and the natural world that has no voice.
