The Issue
Growing up in Mahahual, I've always cherished its serene beauty and natural allure—an unspoiled gem on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The white sandy beaches, the vibrant coral reefs, and the lush greenery have been my playground and a source of pride. But now, this paradise I call home is under threat from a proposed development: a massive water park right in the heart of Mahahual.
Let me tell you, this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill water park. It's a project that threatens our local ecosystem, disrupts the way of life for our tight-knit community, and undermines the very essence of what makes Mahahual special. This water park will bring in not only crowds but the chaos and environmental degradation that comes with it.
A study conducted by a renowned environmental group found that aquatic theme parks can severely disturb local wildlife, affect water quality, and cause irreversible erosion to surrounding areas. Mahahual’s economy and lifestyle rely significantly on sustainable tourism and fishing, both of which can be adversely affected by this water park's construction and operation.
It's not just about not needing another 'stupid water park'—it's about preserving our heritage, our way of life, and our environment for future generations. Our tourism model is thriving because of its unique appeal. What are we going to tell tourists when typical attractions overshadow the natural beauty they come to see?
We propose alternatives that have worked in other regions facing similar scenarios. Why not invest in eco-tourism projects that enhance, rather than exploit, our natural resources? We can improve our infrastructure in ways that align with our values and protect our environment, like creating boardwalks, observation decks, or interactive coral reef centers.
Join me in making our voices heard. Signing this petition is not just about stopping a water park—it’s a stand for the values we cherish and the sustainability of our beloved Mahahual. Please sign and share this petition to help safeguard our community's future.
