The Issue

My home, East Harlem, is not just a neighborhood—it's also a vibrant community that breathes life into New York City. Central to our vitality is “Maggie's Magic Garden,” nestled in the heart of East Harlem for the past 35 years. I've lived, tended, and volunteered in this verdant sanctuary, witnessing firsthand its role in purifying the air that I and hundreds of East Harlem residents breathe. This haven acts as the lungs of our community, a precious resource that’s been growing strong for over three decades.

Now, Maggie's Magic Garden is under threat. Adjoining lots and areas around the garden are being sold to make way for condos and housing. Development might imply prosperity to some, but it signifies possible demolition, diminution, or desecration of this cherished garden to us.

We must fight against such potential destruction! We demand that the State of New York officially recognize Maggie's Magic Garden’s historic and ecological significance by declaring it a Historical Landmark. This status implies legal protection that extends beyond the lifespan of an individual, safeguarding our beloved garden from any future development threats and eliminating the risk of it being trimmed down or wiped away entirely.

Join us in imploring our local representatives and the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission to grant this protection. Let's all stand together to preserve the years of magic and breath of life in the heart of East Harlem—"Maggie's Magic Garden". Please sign this petition.
