The Issue

The Loma Linda Market is more than just a place to shop; it is a cornerstone of our community and a part of my family's legacy. For generations, it has been our go-to spot for healthier birthday celebrations with its famous Prune cake, a tradition in my family. And the coconut wheat sticks are not just a favorite snack but also a cherished memory from my childhood.

Loma Linda Market has been instrumental as a health ministry, promoting wholesome living through the variety of healthy options it provides. From fresh produce and bulk items to vegetarian and bakery options, this market stands unique as a bastion of healthy choices. Its impact on our community is profound, as countless residents have benefited from having access to nutritious, affordable food.

Today, this beloved store is under threat, and its closure would mean a significant loss not only of a store but of a cultural institution that supports the health and wellness of families like mine. Closing Loma Linda Market would erase a vital resource that has been a reliable source of nutrition and health education for years.

We can make a difference in keeping this essential community resource alive. By supporting the Loma Linda Market, we ensure that health-centric living is accessible to all, fostering a community that thrives on wellness. Let's do our part to protect and sustain the health message it provides.

Join me in urging local authorities and stakeholders to take action. Sign this petition to help keep Loma Linda Market open and thriving for future generations. Your support can make all the difference. Together, we can work to preserve our community's health and heritage.

I have lived in Loma Linda my entire life and have fond childhood memories of shopping in the Loma Linda market with my mother. She brought home many chocolate prune cakes and was a dedicated market patron. However, the future of the store rests with the Loma Linda University and their leadership team, not the City of Loma Linda. The City of Loma Linda and Loma Linda University are two separate entities with different goals, but who generally are able to support each other along the way. The City operates to provide basic services to residents and businesses, such as police, fire, streets, water, sewer, etc. The City has a vision of health and wellness initiatives, but cannot force businesses to come to town or to stay once they are here. The University is a non-profit Christian educational institution, continually striving to serve the medical needs of the community and educate health care professionals. Like the City, the University has to operate in a fiscally responsible manor, balancing both wants and needs to ensure it is able to keep operating. The market is, and has always been, a part of the University, both owned and operated by them from the beginning. The store is in the middle of their campus, with almost everything around it, University infrastructure. While the City of Loma Linda appreciates the history, purpose and connection many of us have to the market, it has no significant authority or input as to the direction the University may take with the store as a business venture. The City does have limited authority in terms of land use, but that entire area where the market stands, is zoned institutional, meaning it is zoned for educational use and development. The University has the authority to determine the best use of that land and buildings in furtherance of their goals. The City has no direct knowledge of what the University has planned for the store, and or if it is financially viable to continue operating. We recommend the signers of this petition engage with the Loma Linda University for the answers to those questions. Phill Dupper, Mayor City of Loma Linda
