Save Loggerhead Turtles in Florida and Beyond

The Issue

Loggerhead turtles are a keystone species in the marine coral reef ecosystems. They are currently facing threats that are pushing this already endangered species closer and closer to extinction. The survival of these beautiful organisms are now at risk due to human activities and environmental changes caused by human activities. See the Problem?

Threats to Loggerheads vary in time and space, and in relative impact to populations. Threats affecting marine turtles, including Loggerheads, were described by Wallace et al. (2011) as:

  • Fisheries bycatch: incidental capture of marine turtles in fishing gear targeting other species;
  • Take: direct utilization of turtles or eggs for human use (i.e., consumption, commercial products);
  • Coastal Development affecting critical turtle habitat: human-induced alteration of coastal environments due to construction, dredging, beach modification, etc.;
  • Pollution and Pathogens: marine pollution and debris that affect marine turtles (i.e., through ingestion or entanglement, disorientation caused by artificial lights), as well as impacts of pervasive pathogens ( e.g.,fibropapilloma virus) on turtle health;
  • Climate change: current and future impacts from climate change on marine turtles and their habitats (increasing sand temperatures on nesting beaches affecting hatchling sex ratios, sea level rise, storm frequency and intensity affecting nesting habitats, etc.).

NOAA is a current research project that is prioritizing the protection and preservation of marine sea turtles, such as loggerheads.

Loggerheads are both predators and prey in the ecosystems they live in. They reside in coral reefs across the world. Loggerhead sea turtles are primarily carnivorous and eat a variety of invertebrates that live on the ocean floor, including: clams, crustaceans, echinoderms, horseshoe crabs, mollusks, mussels, sea urchins, sponges, and whelks, using their strong jaws to crack open their exoskeleton. Their predators are Sharks.

Although the situation might seem grim, You are still the key to help. The change starts in you, don’t wait for others.. If you are passionate about saving these wondrous  creatures that have been a round for 100million+ years, sign this petition and be the change. There are also other ways to get involved, like:

Supporting conservation organizations, like the WorldWildLifeFund.org
Reducing your carbon waste.
Man-made pollution is a main cause of climate change causing ocean acidification, which can lead to coral bleaching, the primary home to many turtles, not just loggerheads. By using more renewable energy sources, fewer greenhouse gases are being emitted into the atmosphere, ultimately slowing down the  amount of carbon being emitted into the oceans. Other ways include carpooling and biking places, taking the bus, ect.

This petition aims to raise awareness about the struggle that is put on loggerhead turtles. Signing will show government officials that the population cares about these issues, and that changes need to be made to better protect the turtles and their habitat. This is their home too.

if you want to further support the cause, you can “adopt” a loggerhead turtle at with the World Wild Life fund below.
