Save lives in Altadena by reducing speed limits!
The Issue
In November and December 2022, two pedestrians in Altadena were struck and killed by cars. These were long-term residents of Altadena that were simply trying to cross the street on their way home when struck and killed by cars.
A person hit by a car traveling at 35 miles per hour is five times more likely to die than a person hit by a car traveling at 20 miles per hour.
The Highway Safety Manual reports that a 1 mph reduction in operating speeds can result in a 17% decrease in fatal crashes.
A separate study found that a 10% reduction in the average speed resulted in 19% fewer injury crashes, 27% fewer severe crashes, and 34% fewer fatal crashes. (Source: https://nacto.org/publication/city-limits/the-need/speed-kills/
In 2007, speed limits were raised by 5-10 mph across Altadena. It's time to bring them back down.
Altadena can no longer be a place only for drivers. All people, whether on foot, bike, scooter, wheelchair, or horse, deserve to feel safe while traveling around our wonderful town. If we don't act now, more friends, loved ones, and neighbors will die or be seriously injured by cars while walking their dogs, catching their bus, or getting to school.
Our LA County Board of Supervisors have tasked Public Works with investigating road safety improvements where the 2022 pedestrian fatalities took place on Fair Oaks/Marathon and Holliston/Mendocino. While any road infrastructure improvements are long overdue, the one thing that would make a difference on these two steeply graded streets is to reduce the speed limit on Fair Oaks from 35 mph to 25 mph and on Holliston from 30 mph to 25 mph.
Join this petition to demand LA County Public Works reduce speed limits on busy transit corridors in Altadena including Fair Oaks Ave, Altadena Ave, Lincoln Ave, Woodbury Ave, Loma Alta Dr, Ventura St, Mendocino St, and Holliston Ave.
