Save Lexington, Nebraska — Fund Relief and Recovery After Tyson Plant Closure

Save Lexington, Nebraska — Fund Relief and Recovery After Tyson Plant Closure
The Issue
In Lexington, Nebraska, one out of every three residents works at the Tyson beef plant—and now that plant is shutting down.
Tyson Foods’ decision to close its Lexington facility will eliminate 3,200 jobs in a town of just 11,000 people. The ripple effects will devastate small businesses, immigrant families, first-time homeowners, and an entire rural economy that has spent decades rebuilding around this major employer.
The plant doesn’t just impact Lexington. It processes 5,000 cattle per day, making it a vital link in the U.S. beef supply chain. Its closure threatens ranchers across the country with falling prices, lost contracts, and the growing dominance of foreign beef imports—particularly from Brazil, whose tariffs were recently slashed.
This is an American community and industry worth saving.
We are calling on:
Congressional leadership
The USDA and Department of Labor
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and local officials
To:
- Deliver an emergency economic relief package for Lexington, including direct support to displaced workers and small businesses.
- Provide job retraining, housing assistance, and relocation funding for Tyson employees.
- Fund the development of local meat processing alternatives, including small processors and cooperatives.
- Protect domestic cattle producers from unfair competition caused by increased foreign beef imports.
Lexington built its future around this plant. It welcomed immigrants, invested in housing, and provided for its families. Now, it deserves the same investment and protection.
Sign this petition to stand with Lexington and demand the federal aid it needs to recover, rebuild, and remain a part of America’s agricultural heartland.
