Concreting over the countryside is one of Labour Leicester City Council’s main reasons for wanting to force such an aggressive expansion of their boundary. But we shouldn’t be surprised, they’ve been open about their intention to try and force Leicestershire communities to accept massive new developments for several years.
In 2022 the City declared a ‘housing crisis’ in Leicester after refusing to increase housing capacity by building taller accommodations.
Their own Director of Housing is on record as saying “The problem we have as a city is we have a distinct lack of land”.
In 2023 they tried to get Leicestershire districts to pick up the slack for their lack of housing. The ‘overspill’ housing demand at one point was projected to double Blaby’s housing target overnight.
In 2024, just months after winning the General Election, the Labour Government slashed Leicester City’s housing target from 2,435 to 1,557 a year whilst putting up the housing target of most Leicestershire districts by 50-100% to compensate.
And now in 2025, when asked by the Government what they think of their boundaries, the City has asked to double its size.
If they get away with their plan, where do you think the new City council will decide to put all of its housing going ahead? Answer - On our green countryside.
