Please sign our petition today to save a unique Lake in East Melbourne from being bulldozed for another high-density housing estate.

Lake Knox is home to 90 different species including the threatened Blue-billed duck. But what does the State of Victoria want to do? They want to infill the Lake and destroy the wildlife to make room for more housing.

The Knox Environment Society is a group of passionate locals who are challenging Development Victoria in court in a few short weeks in a last-ditch effort to stop it. But we can’t stand up to the might of the state government without your help.

Please sign our petition so we can send a clear message to the Government that people don’t want housing estates built right in the middle of unique and fragile ecosystems.

Lake Knox is a unique deep-water lake and it’s one of only a few breeding places left for the threatened Blue-billed duck. It’s covered with native plants, including rare and endangered species. Those plants form the base of the food chain for the rest of the wetland organisms, from microorganisms to frogs, fish and waterbirds.

But instead of protecting it Development Victoria want to overturn Knox Council’s decision to reject the intensive housing development.

They’re appealing to the Victoria Civil and Administration Tribunal to allow them to infill the lake, which will mean losing this unique biodiversity forever.

The irony is that Development Victoria has stated in their own biodiversity assessments that Lake Knox is of ‘high habitat significance’. Instead of honouring their pledges to protect areas of high significance, they’ve got dollar signs in their eyes. It’ll profit large developers at the expense of locals, and our endangered wildlife.

But not if we join together to save it. Let’s show the State of Victoria that developments, which threaten threatened species are a thing of the past.

P.S. Our court case is due to start on 28 August, we urgently need your help. We only have this one chance to save the Lake. For more info about Lake Knox and campaign to save it visit https://chuffed.org/project/helpsavelakeknox
