Save Ladyfield protect our conservation and heritage lands in Dumfries

The Issue

Ladyfield is an historic 82 hectares of greenfield/ conservation site between Castledykes on the boundary of Dumfries and Kingholm Quay Village. It is one of the oldest parts of Dumfries and was bought by Lady Elizabeth Crichton as part of the Crichton Estate to be used to ensure the land and views were kept for the people of Dumfries. Dumfries Council bought the. the Crichton Estate including Ladyfield land in 1995. Since then The Crichton Trust have been Custodians of the Crichton Estate. They have commercially developed the Crichton grounds but have not maintained the conservation lands around the Ladyfield buildings. Ladyfield is at imminent risk from developers such as the Crichton Trust who have developed a Master Plan which proposes to build 314-367 houses/flats and other extensive buildings and infrastructure on the land. They are putting their proposals before Dumfries Planning Department before the end of 2022.       The Master plan proposes infrastructure changes to main access roads in to Dumfries. Road calming and narrowing of the main entry road, Glencaple road to create a “High Street” to allow multiple entry by pedestrians into the Crichton Estate from the proposed development.  Increased flooding is also a major concern due to removal of natural soakage and climate changes increasing the flood plain on the Kingholm and Glencaple roads which will impact further on traffic and access such as emergency services. Save Ladyfield aims to promote the voices of local residents and neighbours of the historical Ladyfield site who are against the development of this land for flats, elite  (non social housing) and commercial buildings. We share along with the Woodland Trust, Historic Scotland and other national bodies the shared common objective to protect and preserve Ladyfields wildlife, wet lands, artesian wells ancient trees as Lady Elizabeth Crichton had visioned it to be for the people of Dumfries. We will present the petition to the Local Council and lobby that it continues to keep in place the Conservation order of historical interest and agricultural importance that this Council placed on it in 1997. We will also lobby for Ladyfield and be removed from the current and future Land Development Plans. please help us by signing and sharing this petition.
