SAVE KIPLING COLLEGIATE'S HISTORIC NAME

SAVE KIPLING COLLEGIATE'S HISTORIC NAME

The Issue

Recently, the Toronto District School Board reviewed the attendance levels at three high schools in Etobicoke - Kipling Collegiate Institute, Richview Collegiate Institute and Scarlett Heights Entrepreneurial Academy.  It was decided that Scarlett Heights would be closed, Kipling would be re-named, and Richview would see no changes.

There has been a large and passionate response on Facebook by students and alumni from Kipling about this ill-conceived notion.  The Toronto Star, CityTV  and other media have also taken notice.

Kipling Collegiate has a long and proud history that deserves to be preserved and honoured.  Too many music awards to count, decades of superiority in football, and famous alumni including: Liona Boyd (world renowned classical guitarist), General Tom Lawson (former Chief of the Defense Staff), and Kirsty Duncan (current federal Minister of Science), among others.  Former teachers and principals have joined our campaign.

The "reasons" for renaming Kipling stink of political correctness.  The claim is that students who are transferring from Scarlett might feel left out.  The fact this never happened when other schools have closed,  or the fact that there isn't the same need to rename Richview (suspiciously because one of their alumni is former PM Stephen Harper) stinks.

Let's join together and push the board to reverse this disrespectful, wasteful decision and leave our beloved KIPLING COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE alone!
