Hi Kennedy Park WWII heritage supporters
We're pleased to report we're making progress in our bid to stop Council and Devonport-Takapuna local Board from permanently closing - or even demolishing - the historic WWII tunnels and barracks house at Kennedy Park.
Here's the latest:
- We featured in a story on the Stuff news website today, check it out here, including a great video inside the tunnels: WWII tunnels and house on Auckland's North Shore could be permanently closed
- Last week the Devonport-Takapuna local Board again discussed options for the tunnels and barracks house. While no final decisions have been made yet, it seems the demolition option is now off the table because it will be difficult and costly for Council to obtain resource consents - mainly due to likely objections from Heritage NZ and Council's own heritage team. Our hope is that funds are committed to begin restoring the barracks house, and conduct overdue maintenance on the tunnels so they can continue to be open for public tours (every second Sunday of the month, 11am-1pm)
- Thanks to you and your support, our petition has almost reached 1,500 signatures!
- We'll be presenting our case to save and restore these unique pieces of local and NZ history to the Devonport-Takapuna local Board on 25 July.
Don't forget to keep up with the very latest on our campaign on our Facebook page - it's been amazing to hear all the memories and stories people are sharing about growing up in and around Kennedy Park and Castor Bay, including families who lived in the barracks houses after the war!
Thanks for your ongoing support, we really appreciate it.
Cheers,
Hamish Anderson - President, CBRRA
