Hi Kennedy Park WWII heritage supporters, thanks so much for your continued support. We are making progress - here's the latest update for you.
This coming Tuesday 4 July, Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and Council officers will be discussing the barracks house and tunnels during a workshop. Castor Bay Ratepayers' and Residents Association and Kennedy Park WWII Installations Preservation Trust have been invited to attend - although as observers only.
In the past week a meeting was held between Heritage NZ and Council heritage staff. While we weren't part of the meeting, a clear message was sent back to Council officers: decommissioning and / or demolishing the barracks house and tunnels is not a supportable heritage option or outcome, and neither Heritage NZ nor the Council’s heritage team would support this direction.
We have been supplied with the relevant workshop discussion material and it does appear that decommissioning and / or demolishing are not being recommended, so we're relieved about that.
However, what still remains uncertain are the essential restoration of these heritage features, together with their ongoing regular maintenance, to ensure they remain for future generations - so getting a commitment for this remains our priority.
From the workshop material, it seems final decisions will be made in September.
We'll keep up the fight and are really grateful for your ongoing support - please keep sharing the petition with your networks and follow the conversation on the CBRRA Facebook page here.
Cheers
