Hi everybody,
So a change has been made! The petition doesn't just ask for 50% eco-friendly road salt; it also asks for just responsible road salt (research and best methods of applying salt must be taken into consideration). (Responsible road salt was already in the petition before, but I'm emphasizing it more). Why did I think it was best to do this?
It all started when Mr. Steve Corsi, a hydrologist from Wisconsin, responded to my question. Here was my question but more condensed: "Should we be worrying about salt levels in the Missouri River, because it could be possible that the river actually does not have toxic levels of salt due to various reasons?" Short version of what he said: urban streams north could possibly contribute to chloride levels in the river, and also, the timing of when water samples were collected really matter to find out chloride levels (if water is sampled a day off, then the levels are inaccurate). Timing of sampling is extremely important, then. So are other things, such as plows and research!
It's not just alternative road salts. It's also making sure KCMO researches and does salt the smart way. Salt can still be used--but does KCMO know the best amounts? Are the best plows installed so less salt can be used? Counting into KCMO's budget, how much eco-friendly salt can they use?
KCMO should know this, but they don't.
Until next! Marialuna
