The issue

Jamisontown Uniting Church was built in 1889 as a Sunday School and has hosted many Church services, weddings, christenings and funerals in the last 137 years. Inside the church is a World War I Honour Roll that pays respect to those who served and died in war protecting our country and numerous plaques honouring the lives of the individuals who played a significant role in the Church.

The Church has been identified by Transport NSW / Aurecon Australasia as having potential local heritage significance.

It is in danger of being auctioned off to property developers who will bulldoze the church for more housing development.

As per realestate.com.au, the Church will go for AUCTION on Friday, 10 APRIL at 3pm (NEW DATE! Previously 27 March).
The advertisement says:

A truly rare offering with size, zoning and location this expansive approx. 1,548 m² parcel of R3 Medium Density Residential land presents an outstanding opportunity for developers, investors and strategic buyers alike. Potential: Townhouses, villas, duplexes or medium-density residential development. Link

Karen McKeown MP recently spoke with the Western Weekender and said there is a housing shortage and if the Church is bulldozed, she will ensure a sign is erected in its memory.

The people of Penrith have spoken and many of us DO NOT want a part of our history bulldozed for a couple of townhouses. It is unethical and disrespectful to those who have lived before us.

We are telling Penrith Council, Chris Minns Premier of NSW and Karen McKeown MP: Our heritage is NOT for sale. Sign the petition to stop the auction on 10 April and request an Interim Protection Order!

A few online comments in response to Karen McKeown's comments in the Western Weekender:

'Shocking. Are they trying to eradicate our local heritage ? Penrith is over 200 years old and of historical significance in Australia's history. Many residents go back to late 1700s in terms of ancestry. Who needs more scrappy cheap housing. The old national site will house thousands. The beautiful acreages of orchard Hills mulgoa and along the northern road hundreds of thousands. Leave our historical buildings alone. Or do thry just a concrete jungle like Parramatta which was also a place of historical significance.'

Matt S

'More housing stock needed? She’s joking right? It’s not all on Penrith to fix the housing crisis, the number of apartment towers built in the last 5 years in the area is insanity, public transport in Penrith and surrounding suburbs is rubbish and infrastructure is outdating faster than they can build it! This sounds more like cash grabbing from developers and council rates!'

📝 Letter to Chris Minns NSW Premier, Ms Karen McKeown Member for Penrith and Penrith City Council Counsellors

To: The Hon. Chris Minns (NSW Premier), Ms. Karen McKeown OAM (Member for Penrith), and Penrith City Council.

Subject: URGENT INTERVENTION: Save the Jamisontown Uniting Church & WWI Honour Roll

"We, the undersigned, call for immediate action to stop the auction and demolition of the Jamisontown Uniting Church. This site is a cornerstone of our local identity and houses a World War I Honour Roll.

While we recognise the need for housing, we refuse to accept the destruction of our heritage for the sake of more townhouses and for money. We demand:

Premier Chris Minns, Karen McKeown MP and Penrith City Council: Issue an Interim Heritage Order to halt the 10 April auction and allow for a full state heritage assessment.
Karen McKeown MP: Act as our local representative by advocating for the protection of this site in the NSW Parliament.
Penrith City Council: Refuse any Development Application (DA) that involves the demolition of this potential heritage item and explore purchasing the site for public community use.

Our history is not for sale!
