The Issue

Support the Use of E-Collars for Humane and Safe Dog Training in Ireland

As the founder of The Modern Canine Owners Association, I am calling for your support in halting the E-collar ban in Ireland. The more signatures we recieve, the more likely the Minister for Agriculture is to listen to the sound reasoning of the E-collar advocacy movement.

The MCOA is working on educating the public on the importance of E-collars as a humane and safe tool for dog training in Ireland. Despite misconceptions and misinformation surrounding their use, E-collars represent a valuable resource for responsible pet owners and trainers.

Contrary to popular belief, E-collars do not administer electric shocks. They operate on technology similar to TENS machines, commonly used in the medical field for pain relief and muscle re-education. The stimulation provided by E-collars is gentle and effective, serving as a humane method to correct undesirable behaviors and reinforce positive ones. Without this training tool, many dogs and their families, Farmers and communities will suffer.

It's crucial to dispel the myths surrounding E-collars and acknowledge their benefits in addressing behavioral issues such as livestock worrying and other dangerous canine behaviours. Numerous scientific studies support their efficacy and safety when used correctly by trained professionals and informed owners.

Moreover, the banning of E-collars would deprive pet owners of a valuable tool to ensure the well-being of their animals. E-collars can prevent unnecessary surrenders to rescue centers and reduce the risk of euthanasia for dogs with behavioral challenges.

As a responsible dog owner, working canine handler and dog trainer, I believe in evidence-based policies that prioritise the welfare of dogs while supporting the rights of dog owners to choose the most suitable training methods for their dogs. Banning E-collars would represent an unjustified infringement on these rights and limit the options available to address behavioral issues in dogs. It will put our dogs, livestock and communities at risk. Banning this tool will put more strain on an already strained dog rescue industry.

I urge the Irish public to support the continued use of E-collars for humane and safe dog training practices. Please sign this petition, it will be forwarded to the Minister for Agriculture to advocate for policies that promote responsible dog ownership and ensure the well-being of our beloved companions.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Gemma Melton
