The Issue

Protect Our School. Protect Our Students. Protect Public Education.

We, the undersigned students, parents, alumni, teachers, residents, and supporters of public education, oppose the proposed co-location of Success Academy on the campus of Homestead Senior High School. Homestead Senior High School was targeted because it serves what Success Academy describes as an "economically disadvantaged" community. We reject the idea that our community needs to be taken over or redefined by an out-of-state billionaire charter school network.

Success Academy, based in New York City, has faced public scrutiny and legal challenges related to allegations of racial discrimination, discrimination against people with disabilities, and violations of student privacy. Many members of our community do not believe a billionaire-backed charter school with this record belongs on the campus of Homestead Senior High School. Please take the time to read the reviews!

Homestead Senior High School is already succeeding. Our school is currently a B-rated school with a 99% graduation rate. Our students, educators, staff, parents, and alumni have worked hard to achieve these results. We do not need Success Academy to educate our students or dictate the future of our children's education.

Our community deserves investment, support, and resources that strengthen our public schools—not the takeover of public school space by an outside charter network.

For generations, Homestead Senior High School has served as a cornerstone of education, leadership, athletics, culture, and community pride for families throughout Homestead, Florida City, and surrounding communities. The school represents the hard work, achievements, and traditions of generations of students, educators, staff, and alumni.

Today, Homestead Senior High School is under attack by lawmakers in Tallahassee and billionaires from out of state who are moving to Florida and attempting to reshape our communities. Across South Florida, we have witnessed developers building luxury housing that many local residents cannot afford, rising costs of living, and growing pressure on working-class families. Now, many community members believe our public schools are being placed at risk as well.

On April 22, 2026, the Miami-Dade County School Board discussed and approved Superintendent Dotres' plan allowing Success Academy to operate within five Miami-Dade County public schools:

• Miami Jackson Senior High School

• North Miami Senior High School

• Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School

• Westland Hialeah Senior High School

• Homestead Senior High School

Under the approved plan, Success Academy will bring Kindergarten and 1st Grade students onto the Homestead Senior High School campus as the first phase of implementation. These students will share common spaces with high school students. Children in kindergarten and first grade should who are starting their journey of education should not be placed in the same building with teenagers preparing to enter adulthood.

Beginning June 15, 2026, Success Academy is permitted to move onto the Homestead Senior High School campus and begin renovations. Success Academy is expected to officially open in August 2027. The is the first phase, the agreement is for one year, but Success Academy has a long term plan to expand in our school. The School Board has authorized the Superintendent with the power to cancel the contract.

Current Impact on Students
Community members and individuals inside the school have reported concerns that there is not enough available space on campus to accommodate Success Academy without affecting existing programs and staff.

Reported concerns include:

• The ESE Department being moved into smaller spaces with fewer teachers to make room for Success Academy

• Coaches being forced to move out of their current spaces to make room for Success Academy

• Existing school space being reassigned to accommodate the charter school

Future Impact
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has faced budget cut after budget cut, and public schools have been underfunded for years.

Under the agreement, Success Academy will pay approximately $700 per student to the school. Community members have raised questions about whether this amount will fully cover the costs associated with housing another school on campus.

Concerns remain regarding:

• Facilities

• Maintenance

• Utilities

• Security

• Shared resources

At a time when public schools are already struggling with limited funding, residents, parents, students, teachers, and alumni deserve transparency regarding the long-term financial impact this arrangement may have on Homestead Senior High School and whether resources could be diverted away from students already enrolled there.

Therefore, We  Demand:
• THE CONTRACT BE CANCELED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Together, we can preserve the legacy, traditions, and educational opportunities that have made Homestead Senior High School a pillar of our community for generations.
